Rather than having specific stats like strength and dexterity, The Surge opts for a weapon proficiency system. The more you hit stuff with a certain type of weapon, the better you get at using that type.
The game has five different types of weapons: one-handed, staff, heavy-duty, single-rigged and twin-rigged. Each individual weapon has a scaling level as well, ranging from very high to very low.
This determines how much your weapon proficiency will increase your damage with that particular piece of weaponry.
It is crucial that you find a type of weapon that you like early on and stick with it. You will eventually find a high or very high scaling weapon in your chosen archetype.
The Surge does punish you if you choose to switch types partway through. You will spend a great deal of time dealing less damage while you attempt to catch up.
Try out the first few weapons you get, choose a type and never look back. Instead of putting individual points into stats, you use implants to help you out.
Your healing items, additional health, additional stamina — even your active abilities are all tied to implants. You can even replace your healing items with items that heal over time and many other options.
If you need more stamina, put in a stamina module. The system allows you to fix your flaws at any moment. You are never locked into a set build.
Experiment frequently and find a build that works for you. Speaking of implants, your energy meter is useful for more than just cutting off the limbs of your near-death foes.
Using the implant system, you can tie all sorts of other things to your energy bar. Next time you get in a fight, ask yourself if you really need that piece of armor.
Perhaps the energy that you were going to spend chopping off that guys leg could be better spent on a energy to health conversion model.
At first, this thing may not seem particularly useful. However, as you go forward, its ability to shoot lasers from afar will save you countless times.
If you have no energy when you fire your drone, its shots will only do one damage. You can use this to aggravate enemies that are far away, pulling them away from their friends.
If you have died a couple of times to a large pack of wild enemies, try using your drone to take them on one at a time. Every area in The Surge folds in on itself in a creative, new way.
There are tons of shortcuts to be discovered everywhere you go. The game gives you no map, so you will have to keep track of everything yourself.
When you see a fork in the road, go a little into both areas. The more shortcuts you unlock, the easier it will be to return to your previous location if you die or need to take a break.

Attack to remove fall damage The Surge has fall damage in most cases. There are two types of these breakables in the game.
Those boxes are mostly blue, but sometimes can be black or white, depending on the level. When in doubt, one dash through the stack in front of you, or even a couple of swings, should do the trick.
To avoid this, you should always maintain a good distance between yourself and the opponent so you have more room to dodge out of the way of their most reaching attacks.
This is especially helpful when dealing with security personnel, a mid-to-late-game enemy type. Their staffs have a long reach, longer than you think they would, in fact.
This tactic may work in other Souls games, but not here. Like Lords of the Fallen, The Surge offers players the ability to bank their remaining Scrap Souls for spending later.
This is an exceptionally helpful feature that means your progress is never truly lost. Notice the 4.
Upgrading your Core Power capacity is what you do when you level up in The Surge. Instead, you rely on your Power capacity to shape your character build.
How much power you have determines the type of Implants and armour pieces you can equip. We recommended not leaving any power to spare.
Of course, depending on which Implants and armour you choose to go with, some power may yet go unused.
This is fine, of course, but you should be aware that there are no downsides to using it all up. Their weak point is the tail, which they will always protect.
Going after the tail will trigger their backflip attack, which is nigh impossible to escape. For all these reasons, we recommend just sprinting past them early on.
Fighting them, especially as a low-level character, is no fun. Trust us. In fact, you should always use this before touching your other HP consumables.
This Implant will make your life easier when dealing with almost anything in the game, provided you can get a couple of hits in and retreat to heal.
They can be of a higher level, or just straight dupes. What you should do, however, is check to see if you can equip two identical Implants.
Some of them, like the Vital Injection HP consumable do stack, meaning you get six instead of three uses when you have two of them equipped.
The Implant that increases your maximum health, Vital Boost, also stacks, and you could slot a few of them to greatly increase your HP.
There is no consideration for weight in The Surge, so it may look like all armour is essentially the same in that regard, other values not withstanding.
This is sort of true, in that there are no weight values to worry about, but you should keep an eye on the Stability stat on your gear.

Focus Home Interactive. The Surge is deceptively tricky in its design. Go in and unbind L3 the button you press when you push in the left control stick for sprinting.
There were so many times where I was circling around an enemy only to accidentally sprint and throw off my positioning while wasting stamina.
This way, all you have to do is hold down X for PS4 or A for Xbox One to sprint while quickly letting go and pressing it again for jumping.
It works way better, trust me. Targeting unarmored body parts grants additional damage to opponents and a higher likelihood to stagger opponents which can interrupt attacks.
Once you lock-on to an enemy, move the right control stick to select different body parts. You can also acquire gear that will grant additional damage to unarmored body parts.
Today, the latest Target, Loot and Equip Trailer highlights the game's limb-slicing loot system in all its bloody, brutal glory.
The Surge gives players greater control over what they loot from defeated enemies. During combat, they can individually target specific body parts, which they can damage with a wise combination of vertical and horizontal attacks to then slice off — and what part they dismember directly determines what piece of equipment they loot.
When approaching an enemy, players will make a difficult decision: do they target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?
Balancing risk and reward is core to succeeding in The Surge, and bold players will be rewarded well!
The toughest enemies drop the most powerful weapons and armor, so if you see a piece of equipment you like the look of, you'll need to fight hard for it…or die trying.
Visit the official website for more info. You can acquire new weapons, items, and blueprints to craft your own gear by slicing off certain body parts with a finishing move.
All you have to do is target the desired body part and then build up your combat energy by attacking repeatedly. Then when the button prompt appears, hold it down to execute the finishing move.
The more you attack a certain body part, the more likely you are to acquire items from it when you slice it off.
Just focus on a certain body part and you should be golden. Looting upgrades for your exo-suit is key to progression, and surviving challenging physically based combat situations is a matter of skill.
Shield yourself, or Burn, knock down, pull, and blast enemies at your will as you continue to fight in melee.
Pressing the right shoulder button will make you attack horizontally while pressing the right trigger will make you attack vertically.
This essentially translates into different combos you can perform. The Surge is built around the core mechanics, namely the combat.
To begin with, the game features two attacks — vertical and horizontal. Combos are a big part of the game, and each weapon has its own combos.
In other words, if you lunge forward and are off balance with your weapon touching the ground, trying a vertical swing from there will take more time than simply pivoting and slashing horizontally.
Once you have your target locked, you can cycle through the areas on an enemy. If it is yellow, it means that area is armored, blue means it is undefended and weaker.
When you have an enemy down to about one-fifth health, if you still have at least half of your stamina you will be able to pull off a finisher move.
Just look for the icon and hold down the corresponding button to initiate. Be careful when you pull off a finisher while surrounded by enemies.
The blocking is almost useless when it comes to stopping damage. The only advantage to blocking is that if you time it exactly right, you can stagger an enemy and launch a counterattack.
Given that it will still hurt, your best option is still to dodge. Dodging is your best friend in The Surge. Against bosses and enemies with range, dashing in, hitting them once or twice, then dodging backward out of their range is going to be a vital tactic.
There are multiple ways to do this, which in turn unlock multiple styles. There is no wrong way to play, so experiment with different load outs to determine what works best for you.
To do so, target the area on the enemy you hope to get the schematic from it needs to show up as yellow to denote that it is armored , wear them down, then use a finishing move.
You may want to switch out armor parts later, so choose wisely when upgrading. Different armor sets offer different bonuses.
Some protect you from hazardous materials, some help with health. The bosses in The Surge are not for the faint of heart or those with slow reflexes.
So be prepared. The boss sections are easy to identify. The bosses are also the final challenge for most areas. Before you enter a boss area, you may want to run back to the nearest MedBay and bank your scrap.
That will also give you an opportunity to upgrade, switch out implants, etc. As soon as it sees you, the fight will begin so be ready.
Lock on and begin dodging to get a sense of how it moves. Some will jump, some will lunge, but if you are prepared you can generally get out of the way and stay out of its reach.
When you begin to attack is when the trouble starts. Every boss in The Surge has a weak point, and they typically force you to break through at least one layer of protection before it is exposed, which in turn makes it more dangerous.
In other words, once you wound a boss enough expect it to change its strategy and introduce new attacks.
Start by locking onto the enemy and see where you can hit, but be ready to change to another spot quickly. Patience is key here, and if you run in hoping to score several blows in a row in an effort to end the fight as fast as possible, you will almost certainly die.
Boss fights in The Surge require hit-and-run tactics. Move in the dash is useful here , get in a hit two at most , then dodge back out.
Some of the bosses also feature a secondary bar under their health, which is filled by the damage you inflict. Once that bar is filled, expect an attack and look for ways to use it to your advantage.
When this happens, run under it and let the missiles strike the boss, exposing its vulnerable areas. The implants are a huge part of the game, although you may not realize how big their impact is until you are a little ways in.
Once you do, they will automatically become available.
